Castlethorpe vs Evenley
24th July 2010

After last week’s convincing win over Bodicote,  Evenley continued their season against a potentially dangerous Castlethorpe side who gave us a very close game in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
With holiday season in full flow we were missing Ant, Alex and Matt from last weeks victory and having lost the toss, stand in skipper Steve was not disappointed when told the opposition wanted to bat on a typical low and slow Evenley wicket
Their innings got off to a great start when their opener decided to leave a perfectly straight ball from Talib in the first over, and that soon became 1 for 2 as the other opener was also bowled by Talib. That brought together the 2 best bats for Castlethorpe and they rebuilt the innings and added 50 before Martin dismissed their skipper for 13, plumb LBW according to Martin although it was apparent the batsman did not agree.....
Evenley then did what we have often done so well over the years, accurate bowling and good fielding strangled the runs and began to build pressure on the batsmen to try something different to up the run rate.
With regular wickets falling, more and more emphasis was  placed on the innings of Nick Bell who had been in good form over the last few weeks, when Ben bowled him for 50 Castlethorpe had gone from 51 for 2 to 85 for 9 and a low score looked sure to be set for us to chase.
Finally, a request for a few pies to be thrown soon resulted in a wicket for guest “spinner” Julian and a target of 104 was set.

All of the bowlers played their part, Talib ( 4-23 ) made early inroads and did his job when asked to come back and mop up the tail, Martin ( 3-35 ) was his usual accurate and cantankerous self. Great support came from Alan who was unlucky not to take wickets and Ben found some in-swing to take 2-9 in his 7 over spell.

With the fiery Nick Bell waiting for the Evenley batsmen,  experience was called for, fortunately we had the oldest opening partnership ever available and the Walker brothers ( combined age of 90 ) strode to the wicket full of confidence.
Four balls later and the average age rose even further as the older and greyer JR made his way out to try and blunt the opposition’s main weapon as Julian’s stumps cart-wheeled towards the boundary.
It’s amazing how different batsmen set about keeping out the dangerous fast bowler who allegedly broke Dave Holden’s hand earlier in the year, JR decided to use his knee while in front of the stumps and Simon decided to head one over the keeper for 4 leg byes.
All very funny from the sidelines but it only served to wind up the opposition up even further and they decided to take the Australian approach and sledge anything and everybody.

At 25 for 4 the target still looked a long way off but with Bell tiring we knew bowling changes would need to be made and lead to an increase in the run rate.
With Dave Holden now more concerned about a broken foot rather than hand, Steve joined him to try and steer us towards the 105 needed to keep up the title chase.
Bell was removed from the attack having taken 3-12 in 9 overs and scoring became a bit easier, the quick outfield ensured boundaries began to arrive regularly and a partnership of 69 in 10 overs soon calmed any nerves,  and when Dave was dismissed for a very handy 23 Talib then smashed a couple of boundaries to tie the scores.
Steve finished the job scoring 50no in typical fashion ( ie not too much running ) and 20 points were collected.

We move on next week to Culworth and will need to be at our best to beat a useful side.

Evenley CC Match Report

Evenley CC vs Preston Bissett 24/07/10
Team Reader travelled to Preston Bissett to continue their pursuit of the title, however slim it may have seemed! However we were missing some key players, noticeably Harry 'Monkey' Williams and Callum 'Newbie' McCulloch.
Nevertheless with a strangely eerie, overcast outlook bearing over-head, Andrew Reader kept up his impressive toss-winning streak and promptly forced Bissett into bat. With Callum's departure, the ball was thrown to young but ever confident Jack Henn. However nothing happened in the opening overs to light up what was a reasonably dull Saturday afternoon. Bissett content with just nurdling the ball about and picking up and punishing the odd bad ball that came their way.
It wasn't until the fifty was brought up that Evenley made the break through. Sam 'Cries in Anguish' Holden picking up the vital wicket, clean bowling the opener. Another twenty or so runs were put on the board before the second wicket came our way. Swanny taking advantage of a mix up in the middle to throw in a top notch feed to the stumps where Olly Patterson duly took off the bails.
Nothing else of note was to take place on the bowling front for a number of overs after this break through however. To tell you the truth, the fielding was dire on a number of occasions – something to work on I'm sure. For Bissett, ever-young Arthur Bryant was keeping the innings afloat with some punishing blows, not to mention surviving a number of questionable LBW decisions.
The score moved on to well over hundred, and with it the Evenley heads started to drop in desperation, we needed an inspirational moment of some sort. It wasn't inspirational, but a wicket was found to raise some of the drooping heads. Mikey P-B with it, drawing a loose shot from the batsmen straight into Martin 'Drops no more' Ayres' hands. Arthur kept on plugging away however and runs were coming worryingly quickly. Reader however, finally, joined the party. Like he's capable of, he started to pick up the wickets when needed. In fact, he was to pick up all of the remaining wickets of the day. Bryant was however to show his batting abilities are still intact, becoming what was apparently only Bissett's second ever centurion.
The score moved onto over 200 as was fore-warned, but the overs were running out and Reader was routinely taking wickets. His final one, to mark his fifer, coming off the last ball of the innings (Lucky bugger). Bissett had amassed a score of 217-8 off their allocated forty overs, a score mainly down to our inept fielding. Reader finishing with figures of 5-40.
After another luscious tea, we started our reply. However without Harry, Martin Ayres was promoted up the order to open with Olly Patterson. As we were chasing a 200 plus score, we knew we needed to be sensibly aggressive from the outset. However it didn't go entirely to plan, with us being slightly behind the required run-rate after the opening exchanges. With a few runs on the board, we were unfortunately to lose our first wicket, Martin failing to pick up the length of the ball, and having his off stump removed.
In came Jamie Russell for his first batting innings of the season. And he demonstrated some fine technical shots as he and Olly Patterson, due to their shall we say smaller stature, began to graft for runs here and there. And it continued in the same vein for some time before Jamie hit a beautifully timed cover drive straight to the fielder who some how managed to cling on.
Next in was Reader to join Patterson, these two being the ones contesting the batting average for the season. But he, after a knick through the slips for four, was gone too. Being expertly caught and bowled for 4.
Tat Greatbatch was in next, and started as he meant to go on, smashing the bowler over his head for four off only the second ball he faced. It was with Patterson and Tat, that Evenley began to sense we could win this. Patterson now coming out of his shell to hit more and more sweetly timed shots, to bring up his second fifty of the year – quickest one too. It was felt that if these two stayed in, Evenley could amass a serious challenge. But, almost immediately after these thoughts were voiced, Tat was gone, caught behind attempting to up the run-rate. It was here, that all serious hope of winning was extinguished. Although Patterson still was hitting out, smacking a couple of fours straight over the bowlers head.
But batsmen were falling. Jack Henn and Sam Childerley both going cheaply. In the 33rd over, Patterson was to finally go, for a lifetime best score of 77. Mike 'Bucket-Hands' Bosher attempted to keep the runs flowing with some lusty blows. Sam Holden however was to fall for a minimal score of just 2. Dom Tuckey was the last man in but didn't show any nerves at all. Hitting two crunching fours, showing certain members of the team how it's done. Hope had long since gone that we would snatch victory however and the final man was to go, to leave Evenley 41 runs short.
So another win had escaped Evenley, although this time it was clear what was to blame. Our fielding, from everyone it was fair to say, was not up to scratch. I feel, if we are to have a fully respectable attempt at promotion, we need to sort that out, and quickly.

Evenley ‘B’ vs Priors
17/07/10
Most of the 3rd team was expecting a severe loss to top of the table Priors this week but a few optimist still thought about nicking a victory and that top spot in the league table, with Maids Morton playing Radway ‘A’ the least we could do was take the maximum 10 bonus points and hope Radway lost or win the game to not lose our promotion spot in the league. Off the back of last week’s embarrassing loss a few team changes were made Dom Tuckey out (even though he still turned up) and the ever young Mike Bosher was brought back into the squad and Mikey was pushed to the two’s to make room for Martin Ayres.
When Priors arrived at the ground with news that the ever dangerous Wayne ‘Mad-Dog’ Davies was not attending tonight’s match a few smiles arrived on the Evenley boy’s faces. With the Priors skipper losing the toss Captain Reader put Priors into Bat on which looked like a surface to compliment all bowlers.
Last week’s opening pair of Reader and Callum opened the bowling again. Callum was first to strike yorking the Batsmen middle stump with the score on 0. There number 3 didn’t stick around long either he falling to Reader with single figures on the score. The ever dangerous Young Oscar Heath was still at the crease and he picked out a 6 off the bowling of Reader straight over mid-on.
Both Reader and Callum (twice) struck again, Callum’s coming after a short ball hit the batsmen’s forearm and then a bouncer at shoulder height, the batsmen had a few words with the umpire about the short balls before being Yorked LBW plum as you like. Oscar Heath was to survive a plum caught behind off the glove because the umpire ‘didn’t hear it’ and then tried to claim it was off his shirt (as if that makes a noise). Reader had the batsmen Top edge the ball up and gracefully into Tat’s grateful hands.
A change of bowling was made bringing the in-form Swanny (as seen on his shirt) Holden into the attack but when his first over went for about a million he found his line and length bowling Oscar on 43 with a beauty, top of middle stump delivery (breaking the bail in the process). But with big hitting Clive Turner at the crease the job was still not over for the Evenley boys.
Martin Ayres was brought into the attack but with no success which was followed by Olly Patterson who also found no success with the ball. Apart from making Swanny run everywhere as the ball kept finding the inside edge and going all over the place down near the fine-leg position.
But Clive was the fall next lofting the ball high in the sky and with the call of SAM’S BALL and the Batsmen’s call of it’s Safe, Swanny still had to run back about 10 metres before taking the most extreme Caught and Bowled of the season. This then brought B.Watts to the crease to join his brother A.Watts who had been building a nice inngings.
B.Watts wasn’t in for long though as he became Swanny’s 3rd and final victim being bowled by a turning ball which stayed close to the ground. Swanny thought he had a 4th victim but the shot was too long as Callum caught it over the boundary. Soon after this A.Watts reached his 50 before being bowled by a full length delivery by Jack Henn.
With the last 2 batsmen in Reader and Callum rejoined the attack to try and finish the innings off, which could have come sooner if Olly Patterson hadn’t of dropped the dollyiest of all dollys in the history of dolly catches. The American named Andy Campbell and Evans put on a decent batting performance before Reader bowled Evans and Priors were all out for 192, Evenley boys thought that was chase-able but we could have done better when they were 0-1!
The Evenley innings started not to great with Oscar Heath striking first in the 5th over Harry Williams caught for a duck with only 2 on the board. Andy Campbell struck next yorking Tat for 0. This brought the big-hitting Martin Ayres to the crease who smashed a few 4s before being caught off Heath.
Andy Reader joined the Brick wall that was Olly Patterson at the crease, these two both fighting for the batting averages both went about their game personally, Reader going for a quick fire 42 which included 8 lovely fours. By this time Heath and Campbell had bowled out very economically (Heath changing his action in the 7th over). Reader was Bowled off the bowling of Turner but out on a much needed partnership of 67.
Callum joined Olly at the crease who was still fighting for a big score. Callum Scored at a good pace Hitting a huge 6 off Turner before being caught behind (which he saw a arguable) on 26. Phillip was then caught in front for 0 before Olly was next to fall in trh 38th over 2 short of his 50. With Bosh and Swanny at the crease the idea was to reach 150 because the score was only in reach if each over went for 23. Swanny inside edged one for a single before Bosh hit another single bringing up the 150 and the maximum 10 bonus points. The innings finished with Swanny 1 n.o and Jack Henn 0 n.o.
A loss which saw the third team drop a place in the table but it’s all about how teams bounce back off the loses they receive which we hope to do against Preston Bissett next week
Bodicote vs Evenley
17th July 2010

The Warriors were back on the road and this week’s opponents were bottom of the table Bodicote. After the comprehensive victory of the previous week the Evenley boys were in a buoyant mood. However, when skipper Romaine lost the toss on a wicket that looked like a minefield and were asked to bat, the Warriors knew they had it all to do.

With Paddles Romaine nursing an injured quad from the previous week, Skipper Romaine took to the crease with new recruit Ben “curly” Patterson. The Warriors started positively taking 10 off the first two overs. However, Curly Patterson misread the line of a short delivery in the third over and edged the ball onto his stumps for just two. This brought JR to the wicket who was to show all his experience in one of the classic Evenley knocks. Skipper Romaine and JR fought hard over the coming overs with some deliveries rising excessively from back of a length to others rolling along the ground. However, both batsmen kept their cool and continued to keep the board ticking over.

Skipper Romaine continued his form from previous weeks and began to find the boundary consistently. The Warriors brought up their fifty in the 11th over. The Warriors moved onto 68 in the 14th over when Skipper Romaine chased a wide delivery and was caught behind off the bowling of Dave Cronin for 48. The Skipper was clearly disappointed with himself as he could see another big score on the cards. Another inform batsman in Matt Wethey joined JR at the wicket and with his first ball plundered the ball to the boundary. This was just the start of an Evenley onslaught. Both Wethey and Russell dominated the Bodicote bowlers, finding the boundary once or twice an over.

The Evenley hundred was brought up in 20th over and it was clear that a big total was on the cards on what was a very tricky wicket to bat on. It’s fair to say that Bodicote were short of a few players but the Evenley pair of Wethey and JR continued to bat with flair and class. JR also found some shots in his arsenal that he did not even know he had as the ball flew out of the ground on no less than 7 occasions in an awesome 122. Matt also contributed heavily before being out run by JR who ran Matt out for a fantastic 70. The pair had moved the total well into the 200’s before Matt and then JR were both dismissed.

This still left time for another cameo Twiggy Harris innings, who hit a number of sixes in a quick fire 36 not out. The Evenley innings finally came to end on 300 for 6 off their 45 overs.

The Bodicote innings was somewhat of an anticlimax. The normal opening pair of Turkey and Camel ran a riot. Turkey had two of the Bodicote batsmen caught at short leg by the athletic Noodles Sylvester before out foxing another batsman with a slower ball. The Camel at the other end was his normal self, finding an immediate line and length. The Camel also claimed three wickets, trapping one batsman lbw, another caught at short cover and clean bowling his third victim.
Bodicote were on 50-6 in the twelfth over and the innings was close to being wrapped up. Skipper Romaine decided to give new boys Curly and Staples a bowl and was not let down by the young duo. Both bowlers struck in their second over reducing the Bodicote innings to 70-8. With Dave Cronin struggling with injury and not looking to bat, the Warriors only required one more wicket and when Turkey Ali returned the ball quickly to Twiggy the final Bodicote batsmen was run out and the host were all out for 70 in the 16th over.

The game had very much a Sunday feeling to it but the Warriors remained professional and focussed throughout to wrap up another comprehensive victory. The Warriors return home next week to host Castlethorpe.

Evenley CC Match Report

Evenley CC vs Hinton in the Hedges ‘A’   10/07/2010

Evenley thirds travelled to the very much rural home ground of Hinton in the Hedges for our 11th game of the season. The only changes from last week being young Callum McCulloch (nephew of Tat) being drafted in for his debut. And Oscar Brown deputising as Wicket-keeper due to Olly Patterson’s late arrival into the team. Owing to the fact that we were familiar with the majority of the Hinton team, it was essential that we grabbed the win, or the gloating would be endless.

The coin was tossed and the outcome meant Hinton were put into bat on an extremely dry wicket. We were in the dark as to how it would play until Reader opened the bowling. His line never wavered from the start, only two coming off the opening over. From the other end, the debutant Callum McCulloch was thrown the ball and instantly he impressed with his line and testing pace. Both kept the run rate down to around one an over after 8 overs play with only one four being hit. Despite this, we needed the breakthrough and Reader obliged with his obligatory swinging delivery taking the opener’s off stump to the floor and himself back to the clubhouse.

It was to stay one down for a few overs, the batsmen struggling for any rhythmn, managing only a few singles. Their ‘torturous’ ordeal was ended by McCulloch, the 3rd batsmen swiping at a straight one and with the help off his pad, cannoned it straight onto the sticks. Now two down, but with the introduction of their best threat, a first team player Shaun Ellam, Hinton started to rebuild.

But this wasnt for long as Jack Henn, only recently put on to bowl, managed to snare a top edge off the opener straight into the grateful hands of Olly Patterson. The fourth wasn’t far behind, Henn with a carbon copy of his first wicket, but this time the ball falling to impressive wicket keeper Oscar Brown. At this stage, Hinton were 37-4 after 16 overs. And it was to get worse for Hinton, danger batsmen Ellem playing a loose shot straight to square leg, and more importantly Andy Reader. Hinton were 44-5 and firmly on the back foot.

Unfortunately we couldnt push the initiative through and Hinton moved onto 80-5 shortly after drinks. Thankfully, after a few overs toil, we got the vital sixth wicket, and in bizarre fashion too. Having bowled a no ball, the batsmen swung viciously and spooned it up to Tat Greatbatch. Brilliantly for us, the batsmen forgot you could still be run out on a no ball and subsequently wondered down the wicket. After some quick thinking from the ‘big man’ the bails were removed and the 42 run partnership ended. Now, the wickets began to come steadily. The 7th, for Peyton Bruhl, his second of the day. The batsmen not catching the drive correctly and floating it straight down Sammy ‘Scared of the Ball’ Holden’s throat, who mercifully held on. Wickets 8, 9 and 10 were to fall pretty routinely after that, despite a brief cameo from Lynham. A mention has to granted to O. Brown, who on his debut in the unfamiliar position of Wicket-Keeper managed to take 3 top notch catches. As for the finished total, Hinton had amassed 129 all out with the best figures (bowling wise) falling to Reader: 3-24 off 11 and McCulloch: 2-8 off 7.

After a sumptious tea, including trifle which included Sammy making a fool of himself by covering his sandwiches in the stuff, as you do! Evenley were then to start there reply with Williams and Patterson as per usual. And the first two overs went without incident, Evenley moving on to 8 without loss. However, in the next, disaster struck. Patterson recieving a good length delivery that never got up, taking his off stump around about his ankles.

Tat was in next and unbeliveably two balls later, he followed suit. In almost exactly the same way, this time his middle stick being removed off what can only be described as a ‘pea roller’. Williams followed an over later, but his time, nicking one around his throat to the Keeper. I think you could say it was a difficult pitch to read!

Evenley were on 10- 3 off 4 overs and in deep trouble. Reader was in next, in his pursuit of another substantial contribution. And thats partly what he did, putting on 21 with the again impressive Peyton Bruhl (who had came in fourth). Mikey demonstrating some excellant timing. Unfortunatly, at the other end, Read was having no such luck.  And was to go with the score on 31. McCulloch was in next and showed us his ability to bludgeon the ball to all parts.

Mikey was to go next however, being bowled by a swinging delivery by Ellam. Batsmen Henn and Stevens went without troubling the scorers too badly, both back for 1. The trail of wickets continued with McCulloch halling out for one too many, going caught on the boundary for 17. It was pretty much it from then on with the score on 51-8. The last two wickets came abrubtly, Evenley eventually struggling to a pitiful score of 56 all out. A loss of 73 runs.

It was fair to say this was a nightmare match for Evenley. But best to get it out of the system before Priors next week! Thanks to some results going are way, we are still very much in the hunt, tied for 3rd place. We’re all very much in the mood for what will be a tough battle next Saturday with the mentality that anything is possible.

Olly Patterson.

Evenley vs Hinton
10th July 2010

After the disappointment of the previous weeks result the Warriors were keen to get back to winning ways. This week they hosted local rivals Hinton who had shared a thrilling tie with the Warriors in their earlier encounter in the season. On another glorious day at Evenley, Skipper Romaine won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a very good batting wicket.

After missing the previous weeks match the Romaine brothers were back to open the innings for Evenley. The brothers were quickly into their stride taking ten off the second over with both openers hitting cover drives for four. The Hinton players were slow to get to grips with the conditions and after five overs the Warriors had moved effortlessly to 27 without loss.

The Hinton openers then began to find their line and length making life difficult for the Romaine brothers. After 10 overs Evenley were 40 without loss but had looked in very little trouble. The Hinton openers continued to bowl with disciplinary but after they were taken out of the attack the Romaine boys began to up the run rate with an array of sparkling stroke play and positive running between the wickets.

Skipper Romaine got to his fourth fifty in five weeks and the 100 partnership was brought up in 22nd over. The visits finally made the break through in the 27th over when Paddles played a wild swing across the line and was bowled for a well played 45. The score was on 124 as the in form Matt Wethey joined the Skipper at the crease and soon found his range by smashing Rik Wills for six over mid off. Romaine and Wethey continued to dominate the bowling, finding the boundary with regular ease.

Skipper Romaine brought up a fine hundred and Matt followed shortly with his fifty. Wethey and Romaine put on 139 in just 14 overs before Skipper Romaine finally holed out for an excellent 143. The Skipper received a guard of honour as he left the filed and the crowd all rose to their feet to shower praise on the good looking little genius.

Matt soon departed for a blistering 66 as he too holed out. There was however, still time for Monkey Harris to hit his normal lusty blows as the innings finished on 298-6. The Warriors were ecstatic at the interval, knowing that the visitors had it all to do in the second half.

The Warriors didn’t take long to strike after the break with Turkey Ali trapping Merritt plum in front of the stumps in the third over with just 8 on the board. Hinton’s number 3 decided to show some intent by lofting the Camel over extra cover for four. Prendergast on the other hand seemed to be more concerned with preserving his batting average as he put up a stone wall against the Evenley opening bowlers.

The Camel soon got his first wicket of the match clean bowling Connor for 17 in the 12th over with the total on 39. The Camel struck again removing the dangerous Stevens lbw without scoring. Skipper Romaine brought young Ashley into the attack in the 15th over and he struck immediately as Turkey took an excellent catch diving forward. When the Camel struck again after the drinks break, the visitors were reeling at 42-5. Cone and Linford then decided to steady the Hinton ship. The Hinton pair took very few risks as they slowly moved the score onto 97-5 in the 32nd over. The Skipper then got back into the action in his 4th over trapping Linford lbw for a well compiled 27.  The Hinton Skipper came and went in a flash as Turkey claimed his second wicket of the match before JR showed a touch of brilliance. Turkey had Mounsdon caught by JR off a no ball, who reacted quickly to throw down the stumps at the non strikers end and run out Cone for 40.

Mark Mounsdon batting down the order gave the innings some brief impetuous as he played a number of classy strokes before being brilliantly caught by the athletic Turkey Ali for 37 off Skipper Romaine’s bowling. And when the Skipper had Chalky white trapped plum in front in the 42nd over the Hinton innings came to an end on 156 all out.

It was a fantastic performance by the Warriors with some stand out performances by a number of players. Even more pleasing was that although the fielding was not as sharp as it had been against Byfield, the catching was outstanding. It was just the performance they needed after the previous weeks disappointment.

Evenley CC Match Report

Evenley 3rds vs Braunston 2nds 03/07/10
The 3rds had completed an extremely successful 1st half of the season and the second half commenced on the 3rd of July with a home game against rock bottom Braunston who had yet to pick up a win this season. There was just the one change in the line-up which was Tat in for the Absent Martin Ayres.
The day was Sunny with a few clouds around but defiantly no threat of rain and when Braunston won the toss they invited us to bat and with that the opening pair of Olly Patterson and Harry Williams went out to bat.
Typically Olly faced the first ball but it was to be Harry who hit the first boundary of the day with a 4. But after 2 fours in the 2nd over Olly was caught on 9 after top edging it straight to the fielder, this then brought Tat to the crease with the score at 13-1.
A couple of quiet overs went by until the 5th where two wides were bowled and then Harry middled a chip shot which looked like it might fall safe if it wasn’t for a lovely diving catch and Harry was gone for 8. The totally reliable George Fox came to the crease with the score on 23-2. (Tat and George at the crease together, I think you know what comes next).
Unsurprisingly the first 6 of the day was hit with these two partnered at the crease, it was Tat who ‘hit’ it, if you can say that more like leant on the bat and flicked it over square leg. But then after a no ball 4 Tat was caught behind after the bowler found the outside edge. With another wicket down and if this continued the score would no way near be high enough. Reader joined George at the crease at 38-3.
Luckily this didn’t continue, George and Reader put on a partnership of 38 with George hitting 4, 4, 4 and 6 off one over. George was finally bowled on 28. This brought Mikey to the crease, who played a wonderful, confidence boosting innings of 23 of which some lovely cover drive 4s were scored in. Apart from Bosher’s 11 not out and Jack Henn standing on his own wickets!! The tail end didn’t bring anything spectacular to the crease and we were all out for 137.
With overs to spare before tea Braunston set about their run chase. I change in opening bowler was on agenda, ‘Swanny’ took the first over if the innings and Reader opened from the other end. It was to be Reader who struck first though after some key words from Swanny at mid-off “this batsmen should be in your pocket”. Indeed he was as he was Caught and Bowled for 11. Swanny struck in the next over having a non-spinning ball with too much width slapped for 4 he bowled the same line and length but this time gave it a bit more rip, bamboozling the captain and having him caught (one handed by Tat) on 5 (The only batsmen I’ve got out twice in one season). Some more quiet overs went past before Swanny struck again having there batsmen caught behind off a nothing sort of shot, the ball seemed to roll up the bat if anything. Couple of overs later Swanny struck again with Tat taking another catch from a close-in position. Tea was called with the score on 33-4 a positive start from Evenley.
After a lovely tea (best home tea of the season so far) Evenley continued their dominance with the ball and when Swanny got one through the gate between bat and pad but for the 2nd time this season hitting the bail and it not coming off he finished his spell with 3-43 off 9. Reader finished up by bowling another batsmen middle stump and with figures of 2-24 off 12, this was the sort of economical bowling we needed.
The next two bowlers were Mikey and Harry, both of them got off to average starts until Mikey got two wickets in one over followed soon by Harry also picking up two wickets in one over. Both continued to bowl well until Mikey thought he had a third bowling the batsmen middle stump but it had been called a front foot no ball, this happened again and you could see that the frustration was getting to Mikey as he really wanted a 3rd wicket.
With Braunston edging closer and closer to the target of 138 there was a change in the bowling  Mikey off Jack Henn on, after some awesome fielding at 3rd man, this change sparked the final wicket and a win by 9 runs.
A close victory but a victory none the less for the 3rd team as they trek off  to Hinton for their next instalment in what is turning out to be a fairy tale campaign for the 3rd team, especially after last years.
